How To Migrate To Canada As A Skilled Worker This 2022

The Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) program is one (1) of the three (3) programs offered within the Canada Express Entry system used for processing permanent residency applications.

All the programs within the Express Entry are very competitive, utilizing the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) to rank each candidate.

Canada Federal Skilled Worker Program Requirements

To be eligible to apply for the Canadian Federal Skilled Worker program, applicants are required to meet the minimum requirements. The requirements revolve around work experience, age, education, language proficiency (French or English):

  1. Your Work Experience
    Applicants must have at least 12-months of continuous, full-time skilled work experience (or an equal amount in part-time experience) completed within the previous 10 years.

    • Skilled work experience refers to experience classified under NOC Skill Level 0, A, or B.
  2. Language Proficiency
    Reach a minimum of the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level 7 on an approved French or English language test.
  3. Education
    An applicant should have at least a Canadian high school diploma or its equivalent in foreign education.
  4. Financial Support
    Candidates should have enough funds to support themselves as well as any spouse and/or children with them when they settle in Canada.
  5. Residence in Canada
    The applicant must intend to live outside of the province of Quebec, Canada.

For an applicant to be qualified for the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Candidate’s minimum score in Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) program should be at least 67 out of 100 points. The table below will explain more:

If an applicant can meet up with the above requirements, then they become qualified to submit an Express Entry profile for the FSW (Federal Skilled Worker) program.

Nevertheless, applicants should also note that they must meet Canada’s basic admissibility requirements. Certain health conditions and criminal offenses could make a person inadmissible to Canada.

How To Migrate To Canada As A Skilled Worker

All interested applicants must submit an Express Entry profile to IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada).

Note that submitting an Express Entry profile does not guarantee an applicant of becoming a Canadian permanent residence. A candidate will only be assigned a CRS score after submitting an Express Entry profile.

After being assigned a CRS score, the applicants can then be considered in the future for Express Entry draws then an Invitation to Apply for permanent residence.

NB: Below is the following documents an FSW applicant will be required to submit in the Express Entry profile:

  • Educational Credentials Assessment (ECA)
    For an FSW candidate to claim points for education, they must provide a valid ECA report that attests to the value of foreign education by Canadian standards. There are five (5) organizations in Canada authorized to give ECA reports. This process is not required for educational credentials gotten from an accreditated educational institution in Canada.
  • Language Proficiency Test Results
    All candidates under the Canadian Express Entry program must show the results of an approved language test taken within the previous two (2) years. The IELTS exam and the CELPIP exam (only available in Canada) are the accepted tests for English. While the Test d’Évaluation de Français (TEF) and Test de connaissance du français pour le Canada (TCF Canada) are the accepted tests for French.
  • Documents for Identification
    Applicants are also required to provide information that will be used to identify. One of the compulsory identification documents that must be submitted includes a valid passport for travel.

Candidates who successfully receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for the Canadian permanent residence are qualified to move onto the second (2nd) stage of the application process.

Candidates who qualify for the second stage (2nd stage) will have 2 months (60 days) to prepare and also submit an electronic Application for Permanent Residence (eAPR). Further documentation will be required for this application.

Since the introduction of the Express Entry system in 2015, the lowest ranking FSW candidate to receive an ITA had a CRS score of 413 points. Should in case an applicant’s CRS score goes below this score, then it’s advisable to actively pursue options to improve your CRS score.
