Nigeria is the giant of Africa with many commercial activities going in the country, you should expect to see quite a number of banks. Before we go ahead to list out the banks in Nigeria, it is important to introduce to the chief bank in which all other banks receive instructions from, and that is the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The Central Bank of Nigeria which is also known as the Bank of Bankers are the regulatory body of all banks in Nigeria. They are also the people who monitor and control the activities of all other banks

If not for the activities of CBN, there would have been hundreds of Banks all over the streets of Nigeria, but with the activities of CBN, the numbers of banks in Nigeria have been reduced to 25 and they are all strong and reliable. Those banks that don’t have a solid foundation or have not been able to meet up with the policy of CBN have all been struck out years ago.

There are diverse types of banks in Nigeria, while some of them are licensed by CBN as commercial banks with a license to operate both nationally and internationally, others are licensed by CBN to operate as commercial banks with just national operation.

There are yet other banks in Nigeria that CBN granted a license to operate as commercial banks with regional authorization. And apart from Jaiz bank which has national authorization with a non-interest banking license, other banks are interest oriented institutions. There are yet other banks in Nigeria that operate as financial holding companies.
